SAFETY PATROL:

Students from the fourth and fifth grades will serve as our patrol. All walkers are to use the crossings where the patrols are located. They must follow the directions of the patrol persons.

STUDENT USE OF PHONES:

Students are to use school phones only in case of an emergency.  We do not allow cell phones at school.

PLAYGROUND BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES:

1.  Students must show respect and follow the directions of the adult supervisor and respond immediately to a whistle when blown.

2.  Running games are restricted to the grassy areas on the playground.  No tag games of any kind are allowed in the chip area or on the playground equipment (use the grassy areas only please!)

3.  No running on any walkways, blacktop or play chip areas on the playground equipment (use the grassy areas only please!).

4.  All organized games are open to everyone and all participants need to be included in the play.

5.  Equipment is to be shared and put away in storage box!!

6.  Rough and dangerous play is not acceptable.

7.  Snowball throwing can be very dangerous.  This activity will not be permitted.

8.  Play safely-for example, climb up ladders, and slide down slides feet first.

9.  Jumping off any playground equipment or swings is not allowed.

10.  Keep hands and feet to yourself-except for two hand touch football and tag.

11.  Sticks and rocks are not appropriate to play with under any circumstances.

12.  Play within designated playground boundaries only.  The kickball and near soccer fields are only to be used for those games; all other play needs to be in the field between the chip area and kickball area.  The far soccer field may be used only with specific permission and supervision of an adult supervisor.

13.  Backpacks and coats need to be worn, put in the teachers' tubs, or hung or places along the fence near the entrance.

14.  Ask for a pass to leave the playground for any reason!

RIDING BUSSES:

Students are to ride their specific bus to and from school. Any changes require a written note from the parents to the office in the morning. The secretary will then complete a bus transfer slip. Riding district busses is a privilege, not a right. Student behavior on the bus must be safe so as not to be a distraction to the driver.

TRANSPORTATION CHANGES:

If you need to make changes in transportation for your student please send them to school with a note of the change for that day.  All changes by phone must be called into the office by 11:00 am, so that we may get the note to the teacher before the end of the day.  We try not to make any interruptions to the classroom and if you call past 11:00 am we will have to make an interruption to the class.  If a call in a transportation change is past 11:00 am we can not guarantee that your student will receive the message.  Thank you for your support with this.

SCHOOL STARTING/ENDING TIMES:

School opens at 8:35 a.m.  The dismissal time for the primary grades will be 2:55 p.m. and on Fridays dismissal will be 12:55 for PM K, 1,2,3,4,5. The A.M. Kindergarten session will end at 11:15 a.m. and on Fridays a.m. Kindergarten will end at 10:15 a.m.

ARRIVAL TIME AT SCHOOL:

Playground supervision begins at 8:20 each morning. Students who walk or receive a ride should arrive at 8:25 a.m. There is no playground supervision after school and no students are allowed to be on the playground while waiting for a ride.  If your student is picked up please be here on time.

SAFETY ITEMS:

Students may ride bicycles to and from school. When a student gets to the school grounds s/he must get off and walk the bike to the rack. Bikes should remain in the rack until the student leaves for home. Protective headgear is required and locks are advised. Cyclists are to follow the directions of the school patrol crossing guards.

VALUABLES:

Valuables are not to be brought to school. Cell phones, radios, game-boys, cameras, walkmen, skateboards, in-line skates, trading card games, and other toys should be enjoyed at home.

CARS:

Parents delivering or picking up children may use the THRU loop adjacent to the student walkway. No vehicles may be left unattended in this area. All other vehicles should park in the lot. Please do not block the intersection for the busses.  No students will be allowed to walk through the parking lot without an adult. (Please follow the traffic arrows.)

CLOTHING:

Please label all appropriate clothing with your child's name. A lost-and-found box will be located in the hall next to the multi-purpose room. Those items not claimed by the end of each quarter will be donated to a charity.

Students are expected to present a neat and clean appearance while at school. Acceptable dress and appearance is that which does not endanger health, safety, is not offensive to others, and is non-disruptive or otherwise non-detrimental to the educational process. Clothes and jewelry may not advertise or promote the use of drugs, alcohol, profane language or other obscenities. Students are expected to wear shoes at school. Hats are not to be worn in the building.

DAY CARE:

A YMCA Daycare Program is offered at  Opstad Elementary. If you would like more information on this program please call  391-4840.

EARLY DISMISSAL:

Anyone picking up a child for an early dismissal must check in at the office and sign out the child. S/he will then be called to the office to meet the parent.

HEAD LICE:

Head lice can be a problem at school. Appropriate shampoos when properly applied kill the lice, but nits (eggs) generally remain in the hair. District policy - children with nits still attached to the hair cannot return to school unless ALL nits are removed. You may call the school nurse for more information at 831-8023. Please refer to the Head Lice Facts Sheet in the back section of the Student Handbook.

HEALTH ROOM:

When a child is ill, a parent or emergency contact person will be notified to pick up the student. The student needs to be picked up as soon as possible.  Any student that comes to school with a temperature of 100 degrees or higher will be sent home and should remain home till the fever is under 100 degrees for 24 hours.

HOMEWORK:

Students with an excused absence from school will have the opportunity to make up schoolwork missed upon their return. If you call the school requesting work to pick up, please allow one day's notice. Please plan to pick up the work in the office.

MEDICINE AT SCHOOL:

Sometimes it is necessary for parents to send medicine to school for their child. State law requires parents and doctors to complete a form prior to sending medication to school. Please read the nurse's letter and use the form in the Student Handbook. All medications must be maintained in the nurse's office and the distribution/administration of all medication is the responsibility of the district nurse, school secretary or parent.

PETS:

Due to safety issues, pets must be kept away from school grounds.  Animal Control will be called when necessary.

PARTIES:

Classroom parties are held by agreement between teachers and their classes for special occasions. Volunteer room helpers work with the teachers on these occasions. Donations are never mandatory, but are sometimes volunteered to help defray costs of refreshments and/or supplies. Students are not to plan parties without permission of teachers or the principal.

PICK-UP:

At the end of the school day, please pick up your child at the main entrance to the building. Thank you for helping keep the hallways open.

TEACHER CONTACT:

Our new phone system includes voice mail for each staff member. Teachers may also be contacted via e-mail (last name, first initial@snoqualmie.k12.wa.us)

VISITORS:

All visitors need to check in at the office upon arrival. We make every effort not to disturb classes in progress. When you are dropping off items at school (lunches, lunch money, books, food for the class, etc.) please come directly to the office. Your child's teacher will be notified of the delivery.

VOLUNTEERS:

We welcome and encourage volunteers. Sign in at the office upon arrival and pick up a visitor badge. Last year we received a total of 8,000 hours of volunteer help. This support is greatly appreciated and is an important part of our learning community.

We hope these items will help you and your children prepare for the new school year. We encourage you to let us know if you are willing to assist us in any type of volunteer work this year. We welcome your time and talent.

If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to call us at 831-8400.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Jim Frazier

Principal
